Lose Yourself Here

Deerhunter

Some know them as the Supporting Band of Smashing Pumpkins, Tv On The Radio or even Nine Inch Nails. Others got to know them 9 years after they were born, in 2010 with their Album “Halcyon Digest”. An album praised by many alternative issues being considered third best album of 2010 by Pitchfork.

After 16 years of existence the quarteto already had a few changes being the original members Bradford Cox, the frontman of the band, Moses Archuleta (Drums) and Lockkett Pundt (guitar). Cox was always the more outgoing and assumed since the beginning not only the leading position as well as the extravagant one. On Stage he usually wears sundresses since “it feels anti-climatic to be on stage with jeans and t-shirt” according to him. More than that his condition (Marfan Syndrome, which gives him weak and long limbs) makes him look like a character out of a Movie and he usually complements it with the sundress and fake blood on his face.

But lets go to their amazing Work! First song that crossed our way was “Desire Lines” (from “Halcyon Digest” Album) which has one of the best chorus ever made under Experimental Rock making you travel to your safe place and breathe out all the bad the World faced you with today! In this same album, “Coronado” features saxophone sounds inspired by the Rolling Stones’ album Exile On Main St. Cox recalled, “I wanted that sax on there because I was listening to the Stones’ Exile On Main St reissue a lot…I began to see a pattern forming. Saxophones are becoming this thing. That’s why we did it early. Next year everyone’s gonna have a saxophone on their record because saxophones are just cool.” And yes, The Saxophone revolution of introducing it in almost every genre, not limiting it just to Jazz, started that same year! “Agoraphobia” urges from an even more distant 2008 and already at that time you could feel the vibes that gave foundation to many Indie Bands. In their really beginning in 2005-2007 the music was a path to travel through dimensions of time and space giving it a psychedelic touch which intended to revolutionize Experimental Rock. What no one expected was their sudden transformation in 2010 to a type of music more “user-friendly” with amazing lyrics that before did not exist in this same quantity aligned with interstellar chorus that still could take you on a trip. In 2013 they transform themselves again, picking up the leather jackets and motorbikes and playing a heavy garage rock intermediated with acoustic masterpieces as“NiteBike” always with the American life-style present. Finally in 2015 I think you know what happened… Yes! They changed 180 degrees in “Fading Frontier” from the previous Album and fly towards a Classic Rock approach with some great hymns like “Living my Life” always with a certain pop approach we never seen before. This Album was a great sign of a good recovery of Cox who suffered a catastrophic car accident the year before, however musically speaking we believe the last turn was not the best one. No clues for what comes next, one thing is assured. This chameleon band has another color to show us probably next year! And there are only 15 days left in this one…
